For the first time in 75+ years, Scrabble has launched a new board side and way to play the classic game ahead of National Scrabble Day on 13 April.
The Scrabble brand has a new way to play from today, 9 April 2024 and adds a new, official variation to the classic game. “Scrabble Together,” a collaborative, faster-paced version of the iconic word game will make it more accessible for anyone who finds word games intimidating. It is the first time in its 75-year history that Scrabble has had such a significant change. Its double-sided board allows fans to pick and choose their gameplay mode, so everyone can have fun.
“Scrabble has truly stood the test of time as one of the most popular board games in history, and we want to ensure the game continues to be inclusive for all players”

Ray Adler, Vice President, Global Head of Games at Mattel, said: “Scrabble has truly stood the test of time as one of the most popular board games in history, and we want to ensure the game continues to be inclusive for all players. For anyone who’s ever thought, “word games aren’t for me”, or felt a little intimidated by the classic game, Scrabble Together Mode is an ideal option.”
Scrabble has long been a celebration of words and language, evolving over the years to introduce new words into the official gameplay. Celebrating the fun and creativity of wordplay, Scrabble has partnered with a UK Comedian and Scrabble superfan, Babatunde Aléshé, to highlight the importance of screen-free family time.
Babatunde Aléshé said: “Quality time with the family, away from screens, is an absolute priority in the Aléshé household. Moments to connect together are so precious and I’m proud to partner with Scrabble Together, to highlight this important time.”
Scrabble continues to be a family favourite when it comes to board games. When it comes to who is the most competitive player, almost a third of board game players aged 16-24 point to their Dad. A similar proportion aged 35-44 say the same of their children and would let their children win!
Brett Smitheram, current UK number 1 and 2016 World Scrabble Champion, has said of the new variation: “The game speaks to a trend in younger people who want to avoid competitive games and sense of losing, instead favouring teamwork and collaboration working towards a fun goal together.”
Scrabble Together is available now.
