Product Regulation & Metrology Bill published

On Thursday last week the UK Government introduced the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill. The New Bill is to enable changes to the UK regulatory framework for consumer products.

Sue Davies, Head of Which? Consumer Protection Policy, told TnP:

“It’s encouraging that the government is prioritising a Bill that should address the huge gap in consumer protections which allows online marketplaces to facilitate the sale of unsafe and illegal products without facing repercussions.

“From faulty smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to dangerous toys and baby carriers, Which? investigations have consistently shown how a growing list of online marketplaces are failing to protect shoppers.

“The government must be unequivocal in ensuring the Bill gives online marketplaces clear legal responsibilities to prevent the sale of unsafe products and the regulator must also be given effective enforcement powers, including the ability to issue heavy fines. The Bill must build upon the existing product safety framework and explicitly safeguard consumer protections for the future.”
