Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine had an impressive opening weekend in the US. It is the eighth-biggest opening ever, and best of the year so far.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the third Deadpool film – starring Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine – made $205m (£160m) at its domestic box office. The UK opening figure, as might be expected, was a modest £12.6 million.
It is a welcome change to the figures forlast year’s The Marvels, which made just $47m (£38m) in its first weekend in the US – the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) lowest opening.
Worldwide, the film had a $438 (£341) million opening weekend. The latest figures mean that MCU is the first franchise to make $30 (£234) billion at the global box office after an unprecedented run of blockbusters since 2008’s Iron Man.
The film sees Deadpool trying to escape his superhero past. But his peaceful existence unravels when the MCU’s Time Variance Authority – the group entrusted to balance the dizzying multiverse timelines – finds itself out of control.
Early reviews of the film were mixed but clearly did no damage to the audience figures.
Overall, the success of the film will be good for all of us in the toy trade.
