Bigjigs Toys is celebrating an impressive 40 years in the toy-making business with a look back at its remarkable journey of dedication, perseverance, and family values. To mark this exciting milestone, Bigjigs Toys will be expanding its collection with 100+ new products launching throughout its anniversary year.
Founded in 1985 by husband-and-wife duo Peter and Liz Ireland, Bigjigs Toys began as a humble side project. While working as teachers, Peter and Liz spent their spare time handcrafting wooden puzzles in their garden shed and selling them at markets and fairs across the country. In the early days, every penny earned was poured into the business.
“We didn’t have much. For years, Peter (pictured) and I slept on a mattress on the floor and our sons Sam and Tom slept in the bottom of our chest of drawers! It was hard work, but we believed in what we were doing and were driven by a love of making toys”
Liz Ireland, founder and managing director remembers it well: “We didn’t have much. For years, Peter (pictured) and I slept on a mattress on the floor and our sons Sam and Tom slept in the bottom of our chest of drawers! It was hard work, but we believed in what we were doing and were driven by a love of making toys and the joy they brought to children.”
Sons Sam and Tom Ireland joined Bigjigs Toys after graduating from university, bringing in fresh ideas and a shared commitment to continuing the family legacy.
Sam Ireland, now operations director of Bigjigs, reflects on his experience: “Growing up alongside the business made me appreciate the effort and care that went into every toy we made. Mum and Dad worked tirelessly over the years to make Bigjigs what it is today, and it’s incredible to think about how far we’ve come.”
Continuing the celebrations, 2025 will see Bigjigs Toys unveil its debut Montessori range, featuring simple wooden toys designed to inspire independent learning. The 2025 product lineup will also feature new plush toys from its Simply Scandi range, alongside dress-up and role-play sets, musical instruments, outdoor activities, educational puzzles, pocket money toys, a bespoke London-themed collection, and a thrilling new Monster Rail range.
Liz commented on the new ranges: “Every year, we strive to bring fresh, inventive products to our customers, and 2025 will be particularly special. These new launches are a celebration of the creativity and innovation that has driven Bigjigs Toys for 40 years, and we can’t wait to share them with the world.”
