It’s set to be one of the biggest films of 2023 globally and Warner Bros Discovery has now unleashed the first trailer for forthcoming summer blockbuster Barbie The Movie.
The film, produced in conjunction with Mattel, is set to give a further boost to the toy brand, currently riding the crest of a wave after the toy giant revitalised it in recent years.
The trailer highlights just how culturally savvy the film will be, offering up a near shot-for-shot take on the teaser for Stanley Kubrick’s classic 2001: A Space Odyssey.
It wowed the Internet on its debut, with many praising Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, the Hollywood talents behind the film, for having their finger on the pop culture button. It also shows off stars such as Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, who star as the doll and her beau Ken.
In his presentation at BLE, Mattel president and COO Richard Dickson said: “And of course, what could be more culturally relevant than headlining one of the most anticipated movies of next summer?
“Currently in production with Warner Brothers, the Barbie Movie is a perfect demonstration of Barbie’s evolution from doll to IP. It delivers purpose, epic fashion, irreverent humor, and explores topics like gender equality, and what it means to be human.”
And Dickson highlighted its crossover potential, noting: “Make no mistake, this is not the Barbie movie you think it is, thanks to the visionary Greta Gerwig who co-wrote the script with her writing partner, Noah Baumbach and the brilliant Margot Robbie who is not only executive producing – but starring as Barbie. Margot is joined by Ryan Gosling whose whose portrayal of Ken is stoking what he calls a certain Kenergy. And it’s hilarious.”
He concluded: “We love that this film is being created by genuine fans who recognize the power in Barbie’s purpose and just how relevant it is in today’s cultural conversation. As inspired as it is fun, our film promises to be the cultural event of next summer. As you can see, Barbie isn’t just having a moment, she’s making the moment with no intention of slowing down.”
